Responsible for the design and development of voice; video; radio:frequency; and/or data communications networks. Primarily supports Cisco equipment (switches; routers; wireless; VPN/NAC) and must support VoIP through problem determination; setting up Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN); installing switching; ensuring proper QOS. Network engineering not only includes technology refreshment; MACs and expansions; but other support services that include: maintenance; research and development; troubleshooting and root cause analysis; scripting; documenting; updating network engineering website; supporting lab; testing; auditing; etc. Responsibilities to include items such as the following:1. Analyzes voice; video; radio:frequency; and/or data communications networks; including planning; designing; evaluating; selecting; and upgrading operating systems and protocol suites and configuring communication media with concentrators; bridges; and other devices.2. Plans network layouts and configures systems to user environments.3. Analyzes network topologies and traffic and capacity requirements.4. Supports the acquisition of hardware and software as well as subcontractor services as needed.5. May provide technical support and troubleshooting to users.6. May perform network administration duties.7. Maintains current knowledge of relevant technology as assigned.8. Ability to take and read network traces. 9. Update information in deployment tracking system. Must update contact information; address; the time of the install; etc. The engineer must use the deployment tracking software for the planning and tracking of the installation of hardware. 10. Maintain and update network engineering website.11. Manage inventory at integration center and NCC storeroom. Receive; check for accuracy of hardware shipments; and sign for hardware shipments. Maintain paperwork for shipments.12. Update switches; maintain Integration Center and ship out inventory from Integration Center.13. Create; test; implement; and document new scripts for automating network updates.14. Create; plan; update and implement network standards and documentation and establish policies based on industry best practices.15. Install and replace switches at large sites (Sites that have more than 4 layer 2 switches or at least one layer 3 switch) with layer 3 or several layer 2 switches. Switches usually installed after hours.16. Install or move existing cables (when installing and replacing layer 2 or layer 3 switches or other network equipment). Usually completed after normal operating hours.17. Configure layer 2 switches/network devices (Layer 2 are non:routing switches : currently using Cisco xxxx; and xxxx model switches). Can also include other hardware such as probes; Network Access Modules (NAMs); etc.18. Configure layer 3 switches/network devices : including specialized or core layer 3; help level 2 engineer in configuring layer 3 switches. (Layer 3 switches perform routing i.e. xxxx)19. Configure; test; update/maintain software; and install Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS)20. Supervise MACs; technology refresh and expansions : schedule field technicians; review site after move for quality control of configuration; release field technician. Involves after hours work.21. Supervise MACs and Expansions at large sites which have a xxxx equivalent switch : engage other engineers as needed.22. Plan; design; and document LAN/WAN network components.23. Design LAN/WAN External Business Partner connectivity.24. Research and advise on new products and technologies: i.e. WAN Acceleration; VOIP; Video; VSS; MPLS; VPN; NAC; Wireless; multicast across WAN; new network security products or data communication products. (Includes products other than Cisco). 25. Test and evaluate new and emerging technologies and products. (Includes products other than Cisco). Includes network and data communication products.
