When it comes to accurately reproducing fine art, you can't cheat the physics. That's why Creekside Digital uses a BetterLight Super 8K digital scanning back mounted in a massive 4x5 view camera using the finest German large format optics from Schneider and Rodenstock. Its 384 megapixel sensor can generate an enormous uncompressed, lossless TIFF master file: up to 1.1 GB in size, in full 48-bit color. Compared to modern DSLRs and even the finest medium format digital backs, the sensor is physically huge, measuring almost 3"x4" -- five times the area of most sensors. This allows us to capture artwork up to 40" x 53.3" at a full 300 pixels per inch resolution -- with no stitching of multiple images required. There's simply no better capture technology available today, at any price, for imaging artwork.
Pure, Non-Interpolated Color. Lighting Specifically Designed for Fine Art Reproduction.
If your camera's sensor doesn't have dedicated channels for red, green, and blue, it has to interpolate -- essentially, guess -- the color of each pixel it captures. Even the most modern medium-format image sensors have to do this. Creekside Digital's system uses a proprietary trilinear CCD sensor from Kodak which has dedicated red, green, and blue channels for each pixel captured. That means no interpolation of color is required and makes it possible to match the color of artwork with a degree of fidelity never before possible. Moir -- an interference pattern introduced by the complex mathematical equations used during the interpolation process -- is completely eliminated.
If your artwork isn't illuminated properly, it can't be captured correctly. Creekside Digital doesn't skimp on any part of our imaging workflow, and that includes lighting. The xxxxK NorthLight High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lights we use are specifically designed for fine art reproduction and provide a natural color temperature, along with very even light distribution without high infrared heat emission and minimal ultraviolet levels to satisfy museum standards.
Horizontal or Vertical Imaging? Yes.
Some two-dimensional artwork, particularly stretched canvas, is most appropriately imaged horizontally as it was intended to be hung on the wall, rather than vertically on a copy stand with a camera suspended above the work. This negates any potential sagging of the canvas while digitizing the art, and most importantly, completely eliminates the risk of heavy camera components or anything else falling several feet onto (or through) an irreplaceable canvas.
Of course, Creekside Digital can also image artwork vertically when appropriate. We proudly use the finest copy stand ever made -- the Tarsia Technical Industries xxxx. Its integrated 4x5 view camera accepts our BetterLight digital scanning back and German large format lenses, and its dual vacuum boards gently yet securely hold art in place for imaging, without requiring a glass or platen to flatten items -- especially important if they have been stored rolled up rather than flat. This lets us capture very large items vertically -- over 40" x 60" without stitching multiple images together.

Creekside Digital reproduces your artwork on canvas, watercolor paper, and other art media using 12-color pigment ink ("gicle") printmaking. Creekside Digital's 44" wide printer uses an embedded i1 Pro spectrophotometer to calibrate the printer to each type of media that we use. By controlling every aspect of the workflow, from capture through color matching and proofing to final printing on the desired media, we guarantee that you will be satisfied with the accuracy of the reproductions we create from your originals. We can even deliver your canvas mounted on stretcher bars, ready for framing and / or sale.
